St Nicholas Church

Little Braxted, Essex England UK

Church of England (Anglican)

St Nicholas, built in 1120, was one of the smallest churches in England before alterations in the 19th century. Thick walls (2 ft 8 in) are of flint-rubble and pudding stone. Watch and Pray is carved above the 1535 porch. The church is known for the wall paintings covering nearly every surface, painted by the rector between 1881 and 1884. The chancel inclines towards the south-east, where the sun rises on St Nicholas Day, 6 December.
