L'église Saint-Nicolas

Coutances, Normandie France

Roman Catholic

Though first built in the 14th century, the church was so badly damaged in the One Hundred Years War, and then again nearly destroyed in the religious wars in 1562, that only the bell-tower, porch and part of the western frontage are medieval. These were probably preserved only because adequate funds were lacking to rebuild everything. Damaged again in World War II, much restoration was needed and completed in 1996.
