The old St Nicholas Hospital Church, serving both patients and parish, sustained much damage in the Civil War (1644). St Nicholas parish was then united with St Lawrence Parish Church, just outside the city walls. The present Victorian church was built in 1881-1883; the tower and spire added in 1893.
