Barway, Soham, Cambridgeshire England UK
[Church of England (Anglican)]
When the fens were islands scattered in an area of lakes and marsh, much of the year Barway was accessible only by boat. St Nicholas-in-the-Fen was built in the 13th century as a chapel of ease to the Soham St Andrews church. The simple chapel seated 80. Slate replaced the thatch roof in 1869. After falling into disuse and disrepair, the chapel was converted to a nine-room house in the early 1970s. Original fabric and detail of the 13th century nave, the early font, and the newer chancel were retained. Pulpit and steps are in their original position; the 17th century communion rails now front a gallery. The medieval bell was moved to the Soham church. The chapel is a Grade IIs listed building. Some years the Soham church has held a special service on St Nicholas Day.Barway Parish kneeler in Ely Cathedral
