Iglesia San Nicolás de Bari

Santa Ana de Coro Venezuela

Roman Catholic

According to legend this church was built in the early 1700s after a large tiger had been killing cattle in the region. A Spanish lady, devoted to San Nicolas and the owner of many cattle, promised to build a chapel to San Nicolas where the predator died. Several days later it was found dead and the high altar is now on that spot.

In the past, on the eve of San Nicholas de Bari, 5 December, bonfires were lit around San Nicolas Chapel. Boys jumped over the 'bonfires of San Nicolas'—some were more than a meter high. People placed bets as to who could jump the greatest number of times. This dangerous practice no longer takes place.
