Chapel of St Nicholas—Ploschansky Hermitage

Rossiya, Bryansk Oblast Russia

Russian Orthodox

The Chapel of St Nicholas is over the ancient holy spring at the Ploschansky Monastery. Destroyed after the 1917 revolution the hermitage was given back to monks in 1994. Only one church out of four survived. In 1932 thirty Ploschansky monks who had been hiding were arrested, most perished in Stalin's camps. After the monastery's closure one of the monks saved the miracle-working Kazan icon of the Theotokos. He bequeathed it to the Ploschansky Hermitage which he believed would be restored in the future.
