Meteora is the largest and most important group of Greek monasteries after Mount Athos. The first hermits settled here in the 11th century. The name means to hang in mid-air and that is what the monasteries seem to do. By the 16th century twenty-three monasteries were established on the sandstone peaks; many fell into ruin by the late 1700s. Until the 1920s, when the Bishop ordered stairs cut into the rock for the remaining six monasteries, access had been only by net drawn up by ropes, a precarious process. The present St Nicholas monastery was built in the early 1500s. The chapel and refectory are on the first floor with cells above.
