The 17th century St Nicholas Church is part of the Pechersk Monastery of St. Michael in Kyiv, also known as the Monastery of the Caves. Since its founding in 1051,the monastery has been the primary center of of Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. One of four Ukrainian UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the site is divided between the state museum, the National Sanctuary of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It is the residence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan and the church's primary monastery. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, it was the principal influence in the spread of Orthodox thought and faith in the Russian world. The church was originally part of the Hospital (Shpytalny) Monastery.
