Built in 1620 not far from the bank of the Volga, the church was dedicated to St Nicolas. A rich merchant, Nadei Sveshnikov, funded the construction and the church came to be known by his name, also. The interior was decorated in 1640-41, with the life and miracles of St Nicholas being the main composition on the walls showing him helping poor men, saving a child, and the recovery of tzar Stephan.
