The stone Church of St. Nicholas, commonly known as the Church in the Fort, was built in 1642. Near what is now the Battery, it was built inside Fort Amsterdam for protection from attack. The substantial structure was 72 by 50 feet. The church was home of the Collegiate Church for fity-one years. In 1693 it was relinquished to the British and the Collegiate Church moved to Garden Street. For almost a half century it served as a British Anglican garrison church until fire destroyed it in 1741.
