Nikolaikirche

Eisenach Germany

Evangelical Lutheran

Built around 1180, with three naves, the church was the last Romanesque building in Thuringia. The church was the center of a Benedictine nun's monastery, the oldest and most important of the seven monasteries in Eisenach. Following heavy damage in the peasant rebellion, 1524-5, many changes were made. The first Protestant sermon was preached here in 1555. The church was rededicated in 1887 after remodeling to restore lost Romanesque features. Further renovations took place in the late 1960s and 1987.
