Historically and culturally, the Nikolaikirche is the most important building in Döbeln. The high altar is an especially fine example of carving and painting. The altar, with its wings and panels varies with the season. The 1333 building replaced an earlier one destroyed by fire. A 1903 bronze monument to Martin Luther was taken away in World War II and discovered in 1958 as scrap in Hamburg. It was replaced in 1961.
