Eilenburg Germany
Evangelical Lutheran
The church, from the 12th century, is one of the oldest in the area and the oldest building in the town center. It was nearly destroyed in World War II and restoration continues. Though known as Nikolaikirche, it is dedicated to both St. Andreas and St. Nicolai.
Martin Rinkart, born in Eilenburg, returned to Nicolaikirche in 1617, following study in Leipzig and work elsewhere. Besides seving as vicar, he was also a musician and poet, receiving the title Imperial Poet. He was the only pastor with the people in this walled city during the Thirty Years War and stepped forward to save the town from looting. When the war ended he wrote the widely used hymn, Now Thank We All Our God.
