The brick church was built around 1250, though only the lower part of the tower and some of the transept are original. The high altar was consecrated in 1441. The 1451 chapel was restored in 1960. The tower has burned and been rebuilt several times, with both tower and church burned in the city fire of 1821. The tower has recently undergone major strengthening and restoration.
