Chapelle Saint-Nicholas

Bartenheim, Grand Est France

Roman Catholic

The small chapel, originally outside the town, dates back to at least 1521. A statue of St Nicholas is part of the high altar. It is said that after the end of the Thirty Years War, a stranger knocked on the priet's door. He came from the south where the plague had been strong and was one of the few survivors of his village. He asked for work as a scultptor and shelter for the winter. The priest asked him to make a crucifix. The completed Christ moved the hearts of all who saw it. The artist explained that he put into the work all the sufferings and sorrows which he'd known. This crucifix still hangs in the chapel.
