St Nicholas was a large coastal church built in the late 15th century. Shortly after 1666 the most easterly parish in the British Isles, along with much of the village, collapsed with the cliff into the sea. The site of the church now lies a mile and a half out to sea. It is said that masonry from St Nicholas Church often is washed up by storms. Coastal erosion continues in the area and the sea claimed 10 metres of farmland in 2001.
