St. Nicholas Catholic Church

Chicago (Roseland), Illinois USA

[Roman Catholic (German)]

This German parish on State Street was designed by William J. Brinkmann, with the cornerstone laid July 12, 1896. The first mass had been on Palm Sunday 1890 in a frame building. The church was closed in 1973. It was later used by the Greater St. James Temple Church of God in Christ and then the Cathedral of Faith M.B. Church. Worship ended in 2017 due to the poor condition of the building. Exterior bricks were reported falling down in December 2018, January 2019, and March 2019 when yellow caution tape was put up. It was demolished July 2019 despite efforts of preservationists to obtain landmark status to retain the neo-Gothic building.
