The site of the long lost Nowers Manor and St Nicholas Church was discovered in crop marks in 1986. Typical of late Saxon or Norman churches, the plan consisted of a nave 6 metres wide with a slightly narrower apse. The walls were 2-feet thick. St Nicholas Chapel (ca 1040-1150) was mentioned in 1310 and 1430 and may have been the parish church before St Agnes (Mary's) took over the role in the 15th century, probably making St Nicholas a private chapel to the manor. The site is in an arable field 1 kilometer southeast of the village. A footpath fords the river by plank; the about 250 meters north of the plank bridge at the top of a slight rise, the unmarked church site is about 20 meters into the field.More information
