St Nicholas Parish Church

Dunwich, Suffolk England UK

[Roman Catholic]

During the 14th century St Nicholas, cruciform with a central tower, was the main church in the town. A great storm in 1287 ruined the Dunwich harbor, destroying local commerce. In 1328 a larger storm caused further damage and, in 1342, 400 houses fell into the sea.

Perilously close to the sea, St Nicholas was abandoned in 1352. Though derelict, the building survived until claimed by the sea in the late 1300s.

A winning entry, by Anne Niemann and Johannes Ingrisch, in the Landmark East project would build sculptures of six major Dunwich churches where the original town stood, now underwater in the sea.

In June 2005 it was determined that, though technically possible, the location was unsuitable and the project would not go forward.
