Sint Nicolaaskerk

Wieuwerd / Wiuwert Netherlands

Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (Reformed)

One wall of the early 1200s medieval church remains, the rest having been rebuilt several times. The last major work was between 1860 and 1870, with the tower added in 1888. The church was dedicated to Saint Nicolaas until the Reformation.

In 1765 a 17th century vault with 11 caskets was discovered. They contained well-preserved mummified bodies. Four are still in the vault (it is thought that scientists took the other seven to try to figure out how this had happened). Two vents in the vault walls are thought to be important to the process. Experiments with dead chickens have shown that the process still occurs. The vault is open April through October, except Sundays.
