Hervormde Kerk (Nicolaas)

Helvoirt Netherlands

Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (Reformed)

One of the best preserved medieval churches in Noord-Brabant, the old 15th century St. Nicolaaskerk probably survived because the Protestants refused to return it to the Catholics. The government eventually gave up and let them have it. Had it been returned, it would have soon been outgrown and likely demolished.

In 1872 the wooden organ loft was sold by minister Theodorus Van Gogh, father of famous painter Vincent—who made several drawings of the church in 1874. The loft is now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
