Sint Nicolaas Kapel

Baak Netherlands

[Roman Catholic]

The chapel, consecrated by the bishop of Utrecht in 1362, has only its tower, that would have served as a place of refuge in times of danger during the Middle Ages. Following the Reformation, Catholics weren't allowed to use it and there weren't enough Protestants in Baak to maintain a place of worship. So it fell into ruin, losing its roof in 1670 and the walls pulled down in 1774-6.

Known as both the cathedral of Baak and the ruin of Baak, it is now in private ownership. Public opinion would like to see the tower designated a national monument.
