Norwegian Lutheran State Church
This ancient church is the larger of the two famous adjacent sister churches in Granavollen, Mariakirken and Nicolaikirken. It was common in the middle ages to build churches side by side for different purposes. The older Maria Church, built around 1100, was for the people of the parish and the Nicolai Church, mid-1100s, for the people of the county. The larger Nicolaikirken is now used as the parish church. After a 1813 fire the Mariakirken was in ruins until 1865 when the roof was replaced. It was used for storage until 1978 and funerals and summer services are now held there.
