[Roman Catholic]
The church, built before 1196, on the corner of Butcher Hall Lane (now King Edward Sstreet) and Newgate Street, was named because of its proximity to the butchers' quarter, the Shambles. It was demolished in 1547; the three parishes of St. Nicholas in the Shambles, St. Ewine in Newgate Market and part of St. Sepulchres within Newgate formed Christ Church Parish, founded and named by King Henry VIII, in 1546. Houses were built on the site that came to be known as Bull Head Court. The church endowments were given to nearby St Bartholomew's Hospital. The site was excavated in the 1970s before the GPO headquarters was built, now headquarters for British Telecom.
