Paroisse Saint-Nicolas

Ciney, Wallonia Belgium

Roman Catholic

The church was the scene of tragedy during the 1276 War of the Cow, when it was destroyed with the walls collapsing on the inhabitants who had sought refuge inside. The tower is from the 10th century, the crypt, the 11th. The rest of the church, having been rebuilt several times as a result of wars between France and Spain, dates from the 1600s. The present bell-tower, with its thick walls and no windows, may have been a fortified castle keep at one time.
