Sint Nicolaaskerk

Kerkdorp (Oosterwolde) Netherlands

[Roman Catholic/Reformed]

During the 15th century the Abbey of Woerden founded a Gothic church in the center of the village Oosteenwold. Storm tides from the Zuider Zee threatened the village and it gradually moved to the south where it became the present Oosterwolde. By 1800 there were only a few houses around the church and it was difficult for others to reach. Lightning struck, badly damaging the church in 1844. It was razed and a new church built in what is now Oosterwolde. All that remains of the Nicolaaskerk are four gravestones and a rise in the meadow where the church once stood.
