Kronstadt, Saint Petersburg City Russia
Russian Orthodox
Located on Kotlin Island, now joined to the mainland, in the Gulf of Finland, Kronstadt developed as a stragegic naval fortress guarding the approaches to St. Petersburg. Kronstadt has been the home to the Baltic Fleet. The Naval Cathedral, built between 1901 and 1913, was designed by Vasili Kosiakov. All Russia donated to the cathedral that is dedicated to all fallen Russian sailors. The names of 12,000 sailors were embossed on 36 black bronze plates.
The church was closed in 1929 and these plates were destroyed during the soviet period. The church was used as a nightclub and bar for Russian soldiers, offices and a museum.
In 2001 an Orthodox parish was formed for the church. Restoration was authorized in 2009 and the cathedral was consecrated in 2013, the 100th anniversary of the original consecration.
