Merano / Meran, Trentino Alto Adige/Südtirol Italy
Russian Orthodox
The Russian Orthodox church was built in the late 1800s for the numerous Russians that came to take the cure in the Meran spa. Meraner architect Tobias designed the chapel on the upper level of the Wohnhauses Zarenbrunn residence, where it is easily recognized by the large central onion dome. It is traditionally furnished with Russian icons. From 1920-1970 the chapel was under the Ecumenical Patriarch, then the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, and now the Moscow Patriarchate. The church itself, the only Russian church in northern Italy, now belongs to the city who gives free use to the Russian Orthodox Church.
