Avesnes-sur-Helpe, Hauts-de-France France
Roman Catholic
The Gothic choir dates from the 1200s with nave and aisles from the 16th. Bells were first placed in the tower in the early 1500s; there were 12 in 1549. They were increased to 30 in 1791 and then to 36. During World War I Germans removed six, but they remained in Avesnes sur Helpe. As American troops entered the city in 1944, retreating German soldiers fire-bombed the tower, destroying the belfry. Only the 1514 Charlotte bell survived intact. 48 bells were installed in 1956—they are rung by a keyboard. A carillon concert is given the 1st and 3rd Sundays in season.
