St Nicholas Church

Weybridge, Surrey England UK

[Church of England (Anglican)]

The church was built by the monks of Chertsey Abbey as a chapel near the Wey River bridge. The monks looked after the chapel and bridge as they were the last stage of a pilgrimage route to Chertsey Abbey. St James Church, next to St Nicholas on the south side, was built in 1848 and the old church razed. At the time these lines were penned:

Oh, spare our sacred village pile,
Nor raze it to the ground;
Our parents rest beneath its aisle,
Our children in its ground.
