St Nicholas Parochial Chapel

Diss, Norfolk England UK

[Roman Catholic]

In the middle ages Diss was home to many tradesmens guilds. For a small weekly payment, the guilds assured members that their souls would be prayed for following death. The parish church was too small to accomodate all this activity, so St Nicholas was built. After the Reformation such chapels fell into disuse as prayers were no longer offered on behalf of the dead. St Nicholas was no exception, though parts of it still survive in well-preserved medieval buildings in Diss.
