A Trinitarian Priory was founded in 1261 on the spot where a 'magnificent and venerable' old stone cross was located. A gravestone was also discovered, inscribed, "the place of Saint Nicolas the bishop." The priory was dedicated to St Nicolas and the Holy Rood (Cross) which gave the later church its name. The church served as a parish church after the Reformation until a new one was built in 1784. The tower and nave ruins are in the care of Historic Scotland. Each year a local minister or priest serves as Cross Kirk Warden and leads the annual Beltane's opening service at this ancient site.
