Built on the site of an earlier mosque, the church is across the valley from the Alhambra. Badly damaged in the Civil War, it has been rebuilt. However, the church still has a number of structural problems and has been closed for some time. Under renovation, it is again open to the public, in part to help with renovation costs. Renovation and reordering was completed in 2022 with murals by Ukrainian artists Ivanka Demchuk and Arsen Bereza.
