Flushing (Auburndale), Queens, New York USA
Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America
In 1972 the church was designated a Shrine Church when the Roman Catholic Holy See approved giving several St. Nicholas relics from the tomb of St. Nicholas in Bari, Italy, to this church. The ecumenical ceremony was led by Archbishop Iakovos, then the Greek Orthodox primate of North and South America, and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Brooklyn, New York, Bishop Francis Mugavero; the Suffragan Episcopal Bishop of Long Island, Bishop Richard B. Martin, also took part. The church was founded in 1955 and built a new church in this location that was completed in 1971. It is the largest Greek Orthodox congregation in the United States.
