Built by donations from shipowners, the church was under construction for 61 years before completion in 1905. It is called the "rich" to distiguish it from the "poor" Church of Agios Nikolaos just up the hill in Ano Syros, the first Orthodox church in Syros. The green marble iconostasis was carved by the famous 19th century sculptor Vitalis.
