Kapelle-op-den-Bos, Flanders Belgium
Roman Catholic
Legend says a lost nobleman in the 1200s built the original church in gratitude for his rescue. The parish church was built in 1564 and enlarged and renovated over the years through 1866. The town was a target of heavy bombing during the First World War and the church was among many destroyed buildings in 1914. Three statues and one stained glass window were spared. The window is now in the Church of Our Lady of the Ascension. The original arched windows were kept when Sint-Niklaaskerk was rebuilt in 1926, however a crown replaced the steeple, unique in Belgium.
