St Nicholas Church

Ghulja (Yining), Xinjiang-Uighur China

Russian Orthodox

Ghulja, formerly Yining, has the largest Russian community in china—at one time numbering 2,000. The original St. Nicholas Church, built in 1937, was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Rebuilt by the local government in 1992, it was consecrated by a visiting priest from Kazakhstan in the spring of 2003. There is still great difficulty in obtaining the services of a priest.
