St. Nicholas German Catholic Church

New York (Manhattan), New York USA

[Roman Catholic]

St. Nicholas, the first German Catholic church in New York, was completed in 1836. It was on Second Street between Avenue A and First Avenue. The church eventually was closed and united with the Community of the Most Holy Redeemer, founded by Redemptorists in 1844 to serve German immigrants in the East Village. The church was sold in 1960 and demolished. The lot provides parking for the adjacent Village View Houses that opened in 1964.
