Church of England (Anglican)

Church Website

Said to be England's largest parish church, it is unique with aisles that are wider than the nave. Founded in 1101, it was enlarged in 1190, 1286, and 1332. Benedictine priors served until Henry the VIII destroyed the monasteries in 1536. After that walls divided the church into three sections for independent, Anglican and Presbyterian worship. Religious revial in the 19th century unified the church. Enemy bombs in 1942 destroyed the roof and furnishings. Restoration, begun in 1957, is now complete, except for the spire that was not replaced.
