Cossack Nikolsky Cathedral

Omsk, Omsk Oblast Russia

Russian Orthodox

The Cathedral was built from 1833-1840, designed by the noted Russian architect, V. N. Stasov. It is the most noteworthy church in Omsk. The banner of Ermak, legendary pioneer and the first Russian to explore Siberia thoroughly, was kept in the cathedral until it disappeared in 1920 when Kolchap's coup d'etat failed. During the Soviet era the church was used as a warehouse and, later, a concert hall. It was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1990s.
