St. Nicholas, Bramber, built in 1073, is the oldest Norman church in Sussex. It is one of three in all England with original 11th century Norman carvings on the chancel arch pillars. It was originally the chapel to adjacent Bramber Castle, now a ruin.

St. Nicholas, patron of sailors and fishermen, was a natural for this parish. Until the 16th century, the river Adur was an arm of the sea whose waves lapped the foot of the hill where the church stands. The people of Bramber were fishermen and sailors; and later, smugglers—Nicholas, as patron saint of theives, was still appropriate. The church belongs to the Parish of Beeding and Bramber with Botolphs.
