Church of St. Nicolas the Wonder-worker

Rantue, Riekkalansaari Island, Republic of Karelia Russia

Russian Orthodox

The church, though rebuilt several times, has occupied this spot since sometime in the 16th century. By the late 1800s it was used primarily in the summer and was in great need of repair. It was completely rebuilt by 1892, nearly like the original building. After the 1940 evacuation, the interior and bells were destroyed (though the icons had been saved in a nearby attic). The icons were lost after the evacuation of 1944. The cupolo and crosses were destroyed in the Soviet era when the building was used as a residence and library. Services are held 6 December and 9 May.
