Church of England (Anglican)
St Nicholas Church, the city church, stands on the Market Place, below the great Norman Durham Cathedral. There has been a church on the site since 994, though this building dates from 1858. Historically, being next to the Walker Gate, travellers would pause here to give thanks for safe arrival and those about to leave, to ask God to watch over them as they faced the dangers of the journey.
