The church was first built around 1242 and remodeled in the Gothic style during the 1400s. The baroque interior was completed from 1690-93. Frescos depict San Nicola de Bari and Peter of Verona, among others. It has been recently restored and is a stunning baroque church. Hundreds of visitors come every Monday, making the "Walks of St. Nicolas."
The parish has a unique tradition: its rector must always be the reigning pontiff (Pope). This dates back to the election of Alfonso de Borja, who became Pope Callixtus III in 1455and had previously been parish priest of St. Nicholas
