Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast Russia
[Russian Orthodox]
The monastery was founded before 1419; it was burned down by Swedes in that year. It was restored in 1471. As the main church was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the whole White Sea became known as "St. Nicholas Bay" on English maps of the 1500s. The Cathedral of St. Nicholas was built in 1670=74, following the earlier Assumption church from 1664-67. Timber walls and towers were built later. The best preserved entrance tower is now in the Kolomenskoe Museum in Moscow. The monastery was abolished following the Revolution; the building were adapted and are still used for shipbuilding.
