Bazilika sv. Mikulása

Trnava / Nagyszombat Slovakia

Roman Catholic

The Gothic church, built over 60 years on the site of an earlier Romanesque church, was completed in 1421. As the tallest building in the city, its towers dominate the town's skyline. Over the years the church has been modified several times and expanded from 1618-1630. The church is an important pilgrimage site with the icon of the Virgin Mary of Trnava kept in the Chapel of Our Lady of Trnava, built in 1739-1741. The church was declared a Marian pilgrimage site in 2008 and named a basilica minor the same year. It is also called the "Thick Church" by locals.
