Church of St. Nicholas

T'bilisi (Narikala) Republic of Georgia

Georgian Orthodox

The 13th century St. Nicholas Church was built within the Narikala fortress walls. During the Soviet era a Russian garrison was stationed at the castle and the church used as a gunpowder magazine. The gunpowder exploded, destroying the church and other buildings. In 1996-97 an exact replica of the original church was built on the same site. Fragments of the original building were incorporated into the new church.
