Old Sarum, Wiltshire England UK
[Roman Catholic]
Old Sarum has 5,000 years of history—beginning with Neolithic people, then an Iron Age settlement around 500 BC. They were followed by Romans, Saxons, and William the Conqueror in 1070. The Normans built a palace, castle, with two chapels and a cathedral. The Chapel of St Margaret, on the ground floor, may have been for servants and the garrison. The Chapel of St. Nicholas, taller and grander on the first floor of the royal palace, above St Margaret's, served the royal family. The cathedral moved to Salisbury in 1219 and Henry VIII demolished the castle in 1514.
