The original Byzantine church on this site dates back to the 6th century, so the main entrance is about 4 metres below street level. The front of the building is a very plain blank wall; a small cross on a small bell tower indicates it is a church. The original church was much larger, but several earthquakes in the past 15 centuries have diminished the building. Now a city street and mosque, across from the church, are on former church property. The church has 17th and 18th century icons.
