Soginitsy / Sogintsy, Leningrad Oblast Russia
Russian Orthodox
This church, built of logs in 1696, has an unusual tent roof with strong bands of zig-zag gables. These are rare in wooden churches and found only River Svir basin and the western bank of Lake Onega; it is the only surviving tent-roofed Prionezhskaya school. The narthex was added in the 1700s. Closed in 1935, it was used as a warehouse and stable during the Finnish occupation. A shell destroyed part of the roof during World War II. Restored in the 1970s; since the 1990s public worship has been held from time to time. Major restoration began in 2020, as it is a cultural heritage site. Part of the iconostas and some icons are now in the State Russian Museum.
